Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey once again CrossFit’s Fittest Athletes on Earth

Three athletes entered the 2019 CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin with a chance to make history.

Dominant performances in past years suggested Mat Fraser, Rich Froning and Tia-Clair Toomey were unbeatable in their respective divisions. Alll the defending champions protected their titles in the game and established themselves as the “Fittest on Earth” once again.

The Games, held in Madison, Wisconsin, acts as the sport’s annual World Championships and tests athletes strength, endurance, speed, agility, gymnastics, power and overall fitness over four days and 12 events to crown the “Fittest Man and Woman on Earth.”

But for four-time winner Fraser, the climb to the top of the podium wasn’t as swift as in previous competitions.

Three placements outside of the top 10 over the four days and a penalty inflicted due to a dropped weight on an early workout kept Fraser out of first for most of the competition. But the reigning champion muscled his way back to the top with six event wins, the most by any individual athlete in a single Games.

In the women’s competition, Tia Clair Toomey decimated the field and became the first woman to claim three consecutive titles in CrossFit Games history. The 195 points that separated her from second place was the largest gap she’s amassed since winning her first Games in 2017.
