US believes Osama bin Laden’s son Hamza is dead

The son of al-Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden, Hamza, has died, according to US intelligence officials. However, details of Hamza Bin Laden’s place or date of death remain unclear in the anonymously-sourced reports.

US President Donald Trump refused to comment on the issue when asked by reporters on Wednesday, as did the White House national security adviser John Bolton.

Hamza Bin Laden was believed to have been under house arrest in Iran but other reports suggest he also may have resided in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria.

He, believed to be about 30 years old, was at his father’s side in Afghanistan before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and spent time with him in Pakistan after the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan pushed much of al Qaeda’s senior leadership there, according to the Brookings Institution.

In 2017, US State Department designated Hamza as a global terrorist.
