China to impose sanctions on US firms in Taiwan arms sale

China would impose sanctions on U.S. firms involved in a deal to sell $2.2-billion worth of tanks, missiles and related equipment to Taiwan. China said it harmed country’s sovereignty and national security.

According to the spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, the U.S. arms sale constituted a serious violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations.

The spokesman, Geng Shuang, also called the sale a serious violation of the “one-China” principle, under which the United States officially recognizes Beijing and not Taipei.
