Pakistani-origin NYPD Traffic Cops projecting the country’s soft image through dedicated services

New York: A considerable number of Pakistanis have been serving NYPD’s Traffic Department in key positions, ensuring traffic regulations and enforcement in the bustling city day in and day out, in all types of weather, projecting the soft image of Pakistan in the global arena.

These dedicated services of Pakistani-origin traffic cops in NYPD are indeed earning a good name for Pakistan – the South Asian Nuclear country that has been the frontline ally of the US during the 20-year-long global war against terrorism in the region.

The Pakistani origin Traffic Manager of NYPD Ghazala Ijaz said she was inducted into the department back in 2005 as Traffic Agent Leve-1, however in 2014, she was promoted to Traffic Supervisor, and later in 2022, she was promoted to Platoon Commoner. Now, she is serving the department as Traffic Manager.

“I am the proud Pakistani first woman who has been promoted to Manager Traffic in NYPD,” she said.

She asked the ambitious women to come out of their homes and join the NYPD to serve the family.

Muhammad Akram Traffic Manager NYPD said that he joined Traffic Enforcement Job as Traffic Enforcement Agent in 2005. The job requirement is quite simple. It requires no age limit. If you are 18 year-old, and possess high school diploma you are eligible to be inducted in the department, He said NYPD offers its employees better promotion changes.

He said he loves to serve the department day in and day out, in all types of weather. We issue tickets for the traffic violators, perform our duties in traffic intersections. If you are green card holder, or you have work authorization, you are eligible to apply for the post.

Muhammad Ishrat Lieutenant NYPD Traffic said that he started his job in NYPD as Traffic Agent in 200. Later in 2005, he cleared the examination of Police Officer. In 2012, he said he also cleared Sargent Exam, however since 2021 he has been serving the department as Lieutenant NYPD Traffic.

Ishrat said when he joined NYPD there were hardly 15 to 20 officials of Pakistanis origin working in the department. The number has now grown exponentially, not only from Pakistan but from other countries like Bangladesh.

Our people need proper guideline regarding induction in the NYPD. You are not necessarily be the citizen of the US for induction into the department.

Nazia Shaikh an official of NYPD Traffic Department said, NYPD offers job opportunities for Pakistanis. The department has no restrictions as she can wear Scarf during duty hours and the Muslim men can keep beard.

She said the people especially the sisters face hardships in finding jobs in different fields. However, NYPD is a department which offers great job opportunities, and it has good growth options, better salary, family safety, and what not for its employees. She said the department takes care of the pregnant sisters. They are provided healthcare coverage. They are assigned light duties so that they can give birth to healthy child.
