Wear a skirt in the school day to break down gender stereotypes

Web Desk:

A primary school has asked both boys and girls to wear a skirt to classes in a bid to promote equality and show solidarity with a boy expelled from lessons in Spain.

Teachers and pupils at Castle View Primary in Edinburgh, Scotland took part in the initiative for the first time on November 4, coined “Wear a Skirt to School Day.”

The initiative follows the campaign La ropa no tiene género, Clothes have no gender which was launched in the Spanish city of Bilbao after Mikel Gomez, 15, was expelled from lessons and referred to a psychologist for wearing a skirt to school in November 2020.

Castle View Primary School students came up with the idea themselves, which saw year six pupils and teachers wear skirts to school on Thursday.

But the move sparked controversy with some saying the school should be ashamed for ‘screwing up’ children while others praised the school for promoting child-driven learning and encouraging their individual passions and ideas.
