Pakistan Battles Dengue Epidemic, with More Than 20 Deaths So Far

Virus diagnosed in 16,000 people across Pakistan

Dengue is quite common in South Asia, primarily occurring during and after the monsoon season from June to September.

According to Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health, Dr Zafar Mirza, the  number of dengue cases in Pakistan has touched the five-digit-figure and as many as 16,000 dengue cases have so far been reported this year from across the country.

Twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi have been badly hit by the disease,  7,448 , have been reported from Rawalpindi alone during the last one month.

According to official figures, 196 of the patients who reached the hospitals during the last 24 hours were from Rawalpindi, one from Jhelum and 607 from Islamabad.

Commissioner Saqib Zafar visited Dhoke Ellahi Bux and Raheemabad filter clinics and asked the staff to compile data of the typhoid and dengue patients.

Further, over 3,332 people have been affected in Sindh this year, with the majority of them being in Karachi, the metropolitan city of Pakistan.

Another person died of dengue in Karachi on Tuesday, taking the provincial death toll to 12.

According to health department directions, citizens are to ensure that stagnant water does not accumulate at shops or houses as dengue mosquitoes breed in clean stagnant water.

Police have registered cases against the owners of tyre shops, warehouses and service stations where stagnant water has been found.
